Hicimos buenas memorias juntos. Yo todavía sigo bailando gracias a él.

Could you tell us about you, the reasons why did you start dancing and when did you start?
Hello, I am Lee Chang Min from South Korea. The reason I started dancing was because of my older brother. My brother and I are 6 years apart. I enjoyed dancing with my brother and we used to challenge each other as well. We made great memories together. I am still dancing to this day thanks to him. In high school, however, my brother started to get sick so he couldn’t dance anymore. He´s still supporting me, and his support is why I am here today.

Wanting to be a professional dancer is very often quite difficult, did you have your family support when you made the decision? And knowing about the high level of competition in Korea, do you think is it possible to live working just as a dancer?
I became professional dancer after getting out of the army. When I was young, my parents were not against me being a dancer, but they couldn’t support me financially so I had to work very hard to figure out how to support myself. When I became a professional dancer, I practiced rigorously. I do think that it is hard to make a living in Korea as a dancer, which is why a lot of dancers in Korea seek for opportunities overseas to pursue their careers. B-boys from Korea have been the world’s best dancers since a few years back. Popping, locking and urban dancers these days are also getting their names out there. That’s why I respect a lot Korean dancers.

Inside the choreographers´world you would have some referents, could you say which ones?
My role model is Nick Bass, Michael Jackson’s backup dancer. When I was watching him, I just fell completely for him. It happened 10 years ago. He also choreographed for K-pop idols such as Super Junior and EXO. As for my second role model, I actually knew him before he got famous. When I watched him dance, I felt like he was on another level from everyone else. As time went by, he became a world-renowned dancer—his name is Keone Madrid. He became even more famous after choreographing for BTS.

When you start a new choreography, how do you start the process? Do you take some inspiration from previous works? What characteristics do you think make your choreographies different from other choreographers?
The most important thing when I make a choreography is the first thought or feeling that comes to my mind as soon as I hear the song. For example, even if it’s a sad song I could feel excited. I go with my feelings more than I do the lyrics.

RECUERDA: PRACTICA

From your point of view, which qualities are the best in a dancer?
I think it is very important for a dancer to have a creative mind and to keep up with what’s trending in music. It is also absolutely a must to practice, practice, practice! I think that dancers should spend time dancing freely and using their body rather than thinking too much while listening to music. Remember: PRACTICE

Any artist is demanding with their own work, but if you had to choose between all of them, which would be the most proud you feel of?
The choreography that I’m the most proud of is the one that I made when I was on the verge of quitting dance. The choreography was to EXO’s song “Promise (약속)”. The song really resonated with how I was feeling at the time because EXO performed the song as a way to show gratitude towards their fans, and that feeling of gratitude overwhelmed me when I first listened to the song. I realized that my dancing was something that I should be grateful for as well. From that point on, I started to appreciate dancing more and more.

How do you feel about knowing your work is being followed in a place like Spain?
I have liked choreographing dances ever since I was young. When they asked me “what do you want to be when you grow up” in elementary school, I only had two answers: soccer player or choreographer. Choreographing is something that I’ve been working on consistently ever since I was young and things like YouTube and even the internet didn’t exist back then so
it wasn’t possible to share my work with others, let alone internationally. So of course I was surprised and thankful when I uploaded my work to online communities like YouTube and even people in Spain would watch and become fans of my work. Not only that, people even made cover videos of my own choreography. I will continue to work hard choreographing,
so I hope that I gain more fans and that they will support and show love for my work in the future!

Looking at the kpop abroad, one of the things that strikes your attention are their complex
choreographies, what do you think about their influence on the fans?
If you look at choreographies for BTS’ songs, the dances themselves are highly creative, very complex, and the movements also require a lot of dance foundation to perform correctly, but at the same time the choreography also looks and feels very natural. It is because the members of BTS practice and train so hard that they are able to dance so well even though they are not necessarily all professional dancers. So because of their hard work ethic and their ability to perform such difficult choreographies at such a high level, I think fans highly respect idols like BTS.

Related with 1997 studio, what do you think set it apart from other studios?
Before I founded 1997 Dance Studio, I was also an instructor at another big dance academy. At that academy they focused too much on business rather than dance, so when I founded 1997, I had the goal in mind to make it a place where dance was the most important aspect and also aimed to make it a place where students and teachers alike could enjoy dancing.

In Spain we have dancers with more than 30 years of career, in Korea is the age an influence to decide when to finish it?
There are also dancers in Korea who have been dancing for over 30 years, but they are traditional Korean dancers, not modern dancers. It is really difficult to make a living as a dancer in Korea, so many people give up. I have seen many friends and students give up and I feel like it is such a shame, but I also understand them because I have gone through the same
situation and thought about giving up as well. However, I believe that if you keep dancing, people will eventually come to like your dancing and you will have your own fans. There is no specific age at which people retire; in my case, I will continue dancing as long as my body is able to!
